Alton Estate Lighting Strategy
Project details
Overview
LFB were commissioned to deliver a place-based lighting strategy for the Alton Estate, following the development of Stage 4 technical lighting for Downshire Fields within Alton estate. The lighting strategy proposed a multi-tiered approach that is able to respond to immediate concerns from residents, alongside creating a new approach to long-term improvements of buildings and the public realm. The project was awarded an Honorable Mention award at the 2026 LUCI Cities and Lighting Awards.

Before & After
Design process
To develop this strategy, LFB worked closely with a number of teams within Wandsworth including Local Growth Managers, Estate Lighting Managers, Ecology Officers and Community Safety Officers among others. Early discussions with these various groups helped us gain a better understanding of the estate and the complex regeneration that will be occurring in the future. It was also important to acknowledge Wandsworth Council’s ambitions to integrate lighting consideration into their programs in future.
To further inform the design, LFB conducted numerous site visits by day and after dark as well as two community engagement sessions. One session was a nightwalk around the estate attended by residents and many teams from the municipality. These events raised key elements and concerns that the lighting strategy needed to address. Active engagement also provided an understanding of how the residents cherish their estate and recognise the benefits in taking a new lighting design approach to the area.
This in-depth engagement process was vital to addressing the complexity of the estate and multiple housing typologies, none of which would not work under a ‘one-size fits all’ design approach. We worked to ensure that long-term improvements would not be affected by redevelopment in the future.
