Overview

Following a number of safety audits and public surveys, LLDC appointed LFB to lead a team to undertake a lighting assessment of the QEOP with a focus on safety after dark.

LFB, in collaboration with Configuring Light and Make Space for Girls, developed a methodology which was able to integrate lighting recommendations with improved public space improvements resulting a holistic improvement to the area.

The assessment included numerous site visits, attending community workshops and events, as well as a number of technical meetings with the lighting team.

Although the initial brief called for simplified recommendations to raise or lower light levels, LFB went further to focus on long term placemaking in the park that took into account the complex user groups which were being introduced into the park as a result of new developments in the area.

Since it’s delivery, LLDC have acted and delivered a number of the recommendations outlined in the report and shared the document with design teams undertaking design improvements currently in the park.

We continue to work closely with the technical lighting team at LLDC to improve lighting across the park and ensure future developments are taking on board the recommendations outlined in the assessment to help make the park more inviting, safe and inclusive in the coming years. This included adding lights to covered seating areas along a busy pedestrian route to improve feelings of safety and security after dark.
