Lighting design & after-dark engagement
After dark engagement forms a critical aspect of our methodology.
We encourage everyone to participate and express their thoughts and opinions. Working closely with architects, landscape architects, local governments and stakeholders, we ensure that lighting is a fully integrated and coordinated element of the design.

An innovative approach to lighting design
Our starting point is to listen.
We know that understanding the users and the use of each space we work in is key to designing successful spaces for the future. In addition to conducting lighting assessments and after-dark analysis of a space, we also seek to understand the social life of places through social research and after-dark engagement. We use a variety of methods from nightwalks, interviews, temporary lighting demonstrations, observation and photo documentation to build a common language about light. This ensures there is a clear understanding of the users and use of space.
This process is key to avoid assumptions and pre conceived notions of places and communities in order to help avoid design constraints. We help clients clearly identify technical, economical and social considerations at the outset of each project and bring the various stakeholders of a project together at the outset.
We have played a major role in building ‘social lighting’ as a design approach over the past 20 years.
With strong links to research and academic studies, we continue to help shape lighting policy and professional practice through our methodology and projects, and our participation in policy forums, conferences, research programmes and education.
A holistic approach at every stage of the design.
We work closely and collaboratively with designers, planners, policymakers and local governments from a strategic level through to project completion (RIBA Stages 0-6). We work with clients to deliver lighting strategies and guidance for new and existing developments, input into project briefs and review proposed designs. We design lighting concepts and deliver technical lighting solutions for projects of any scale and complexity.
