Overview

Poplar HARCA appointed LFB to engage with residents and stakeholders of Teviot Estate, an estate that is in the process of undergoing significant regeneration, to identify and deliver meanwhile lighting improvements.

The co-design process was tailored to ensure all proposals would be feasible to deliver in the short term and would also improve areas residents had highlighted as ‘problem areas’. Both the client and developer were present at all events ensuring that all stakeholders were able to hear and understand the issues clients cared deeply about.

Following a community site walk after dark LFB developed design ideas for the residents to vote on collectively to decide which design(s) they wanted to see implemented. The chosen option was then developed for installation and installed by the contractor.

The lighting to the war memorial has now created a local landmark for the community after dark, no longer lost to the shadows of the streetlights and bus stop adjacent. The impression of the area has changed with a more positive impression of safety and security and we’re thrilled to see 2no. community events have taken place last year following installation - a ‘switch on’ event following installation as well as a remembrance day evening event which were both very well attended.

Teviot is a powerful example to showcase that small but significant lighting interventions can create a positive impact in communities. The participation process was critical in making this project a success.
