Cleverly Estate
Project details
Overview
Cleverly Estate, located within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, is a unique estate dating back to 1928. Cleverly set new standards for social housing at the time because the estate was spacious, had separate bathrooms and a wired-in playground. The architectural style takes after the style of Christopher Wren with some unique building details still existing to this day.
The lighting currently on site is outdated and consists of mainly building and column mounted floodlights. Following consultation and nightwalks with the residents, it became clear that safety for children in the playgrounds was a top concern. In two of the courtyard spaces a sense of safety and security was lacking with many residents implying crime and drugs were a problem although Cleverly is one of the safest estates within Peabody’s portfolio.
The proposed lighting therefore aims to enhance the historical character and residential scale of the courtyard spaces through wall mounted lanterns and carefully placed columns to illuminate play areas after dark. Maintenance and appropriate light levels were taken into consideration to ensure the estate would not be overlit. Although the pandemic halted site tests of lighting to key architectural features, it is a lighting element we are keen to explore.
