Overview

As part of the Peabody IMPROVE program, the new landscape and lighting of Whitecross Estate focuses on giving a new and improved outdoor experience to

its residents.

Prior to the commencement of design workshops for Whitecross Estate, Light Follows Behaviour in collaboration with Configuring Light, a research arm at the London School of Economics which LFB are a member, organised and led an international workshop which saw 25 lighting designers work with residents of the estate and Peabody to deliver a better understanding of the site’s specific social and lighting issues.

The various days and nights of interviews, night walks, site tests and light art events helped create a strong connection with the residents and the team at Peabody which assisted on site mockups in later stages of design. It also helped bring the importance of lighting to the forefront of discussions kickstarting Peabody’s focus on improving lighting across their estates.

The current design proposal has been submitted for planning and the lighting aims to bring a residential atmosphere to the estate and it’s open spaces in response to comments received during the workshops.
