The Abbey Masterplan
Project details
Overview
Abbey Estate in Thetford is a large housing development with a challenging public realm condition at present.
As many housing developments from the time, the car focused public realm is no longer fit for purpose for a community that requires better quality space.
The lighting masterplan was developed with the crucial understanding that vehicles, and vehicular traffic must be retained as this is the primary means of transport for residents, but additional lighting must be introduced at a human scale to support the pedestrian routes and public space design proposed for the future infill development.
A welcoming lighting atmosphere is usually a combination of different layers of lighting. We worked with a special focus on creating the right atmosphere based on the character and identity of each place on the Estate.
On The Abbey it is critical, considering the size and complexity of the urban fabric, to differentiate each place with more or fewer layers of light. The Outline Lighting Strategy therefore, uses a matrix with the various layers of light we propose to be used. This approach ensures that spaces and routes can be unique while also ensuring the right lighting levels are delivered to support safety and security.
