Overview

LFB were invited to work with the design team in Portsmouth for a large redevelopment of an existing social housing estate and the public realm.

Community engagement was a focus and due to concerns from the community with lighting and dark areas on the estate after dark a lighting workshop and information session was a priority. The workshop was held in July so our team utilised a covered car park on the site to create 3no lighting scenarios in person for the public to observe. We focused on the problem with bulkhead lighting and glare, human scale lighting and the opportunities in the future design to introduce new types of lighting on the site currently lit by bulkheads and streetlights.

In addition to the public event, we also worked with teenagers from the local youth club in a separate session. Through talking about lighting we learned about the site from the point of view of these teens and the challenges they face on the estate on a daily basis.

Following a short lighting intro we let the group get their hands on the lights in the demo rooms and create the lighting for each scenario and also become confident in speaking about themselves and their ideas for the new lighting design.
