Overview

Light Follows Behaviour were appointed to prepare an Outline Lighting Strategy in support of proposals to transform The Barnsbury Estate in Islington. The main aim of the lighting strategy was to introduce human scale lighting and create a welcoming environment for pedestrians.

A number of community engagement events were held, including a night walk organised and lead by LFB to discuss concerns with residents and ensure the future lighting proposals responded to their needs.

Working in close collaboration with the wider design team and consultants we were able to find appropriate compromises that supported sustainability and ecological goals, such as reduced light spill into SINC area and clearly defining lighting control requirements to minimise negative impact on flora and fauna, most crucial bats which were present in the area.

The lighting also aims to showcase the unique architecture and circulation spaces, including mews streets, and encourage use of outdoor play areas by children and teenagers around the year. The application was overwhelminingly supported by the council and praised for it’s strong resident engagement approach to the design.
