Piazza Lambrakis
Project details
Overview
The improved lighting of Piazza Lambrakis was part of a European research initiative, ENLIGHTENme. ENLIGHTENme brings together experts from different scientific fields and sectors, such as urban development and health research over four years to collect evidence about indoor and outdoor lighting impacts on human health and wellbeing – particularly for people over the age of 65 and other vulnerable groups. The project aims to research, develop and validate innovative solutions to support innovative urban lighting policies and guidance for better health in cities throughout Europe.
Within this framework, a lighting project for Piazza Lambrakis in Bologna was proposed and realised. The design phase was informed by a series of workshops and conversations with the local community that raised key aspects of the lighting that were preventing the square from being utilised to it’s full potential. The new lighting has responded to the needs that emerged during the engagement phase and has transformed and extended the use of the square well beyond the initial aspirations. From a technical aspect the new lighting also reduces energy consumption, obtrusive lighting and celebrates the architectural features and historic character making it a pleasant space to dwell and meet others.
